First Farai sings against drug abuse

Titled No to Drugs (Teererai Vabereki), the song is a chunk of a number of music projects that First Farai will do as part of efforts meant to curb the drug scourge in the country.

Sungura musician First Farai has joined forces with Titus Majaya and JB Baba MaSuit to release a song that raises awareness against drug and substance abuse.

Titled No to Drugs (Teererai Vabereki), the song is a chunk of a number of music projects that First Farai will do as part of efforts meant to curb the drug scourge in the country.

The bulk musician is collaborating with the government and other stakeholders in fighting the drug scourge, which is slowly gnawing at the younger generation.

“I am now working with the government in the fight against drug and substance abuse,” First Farai told Standard Style.

“I have teamed up with Titus Majaya and JB Baba MaSuit in this first project and there are more awareness projects coming.”

First Farai said the project will see him join drug and substance awareness campaigns organised by the government and other stakeholders.

“We will conduct road shows, live music shows, attend expos and conferences as we move to raise awareness, especially among the youths.

Authorities have all but admitted that the drug problem is deep-rooted in the country with the government setting up a commission solely meant to deal with the issue of drug and substance abuse in 2022.

While addressing crowds that had gathered for the National Youth Day commemorations in Harare three years ago, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the government had established the National Drug Abuse Fund, which was provided for in that year’s budget.

The extent of the indulgence in drugs and substance abuse in the country is phenomenal and has even reached alarming levels, forcing authorities to act.

First Farai believes artists have a role to play in fighting drug and substance abuse.

The musician hogged the limelight when he represented Zimbabwe at inter-regional music Crossroads finals held in Tanzania in 2002.

Determined to make it, he started working on a number of projects and his breakthrough came when he released his album Simba Racho which did well with the song Secret Number.

He has a rich discography of more than 18 albums.
