Argument between mentally ill men turns deadly

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the tragic incident occurred on Saturday.

AN argument between two suspected mentally ill men ended tragically in Zvishavane after one of them was fatally assaulted with a log.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the tragic incident occurred on Saturday.

“Both the now-deceased Taruvinga Dhema (48) of village Pius under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane and the suspect Jemitias Manduna of village Manduna under Chief Tshovani in Chiredzi are suspected to be mentally challenged used to roam around Mandava suburb in Zvishavane,” Mahoko said.

“The two men had an altercation over a fireplace behind La Liga Bar.

“Manduna allegedly picked a log and a stone which he used to assault Dhema on the head and face until he fell unconscious.”

Mahoko said Dhema was taken to Zvishavane District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We appeal to people with mentally-challenged relatives to seek medication or have them admitted at mental health institutions.”
