I have been 2 months sober: Dobba Don speaks on rehab

Dobba Don, real name Brendon Mehlomakhulu, has had a problem with drug abuse, especially crystal meth, a highly addictive stimulant known as mutoriro in street lingo.

DOBBA Don, a dancehall chanter who has been battling the effects of drug abuse and was at one time homeless, is now on the mend and recovering from a rehabilitation centre in Norton.

The Mudendere hit , who has been fighting addiction to drugs and other substances for years, made an appearance at the recently held Inter NGO games in Harare last week, where he perfomed a series of his old hit tracks and new tracks, signalling his return to normalcy.

Dobba Don, real name Brendon Mehlomakhulu, has had a problem with drug abuse, especially crystal meth, a highly addictive stimulant known as mutoriro in street lingo.

Speaking to the media, he said that the fame and public attention he got at an early age drove him to a substance abuse lifestyle.

He has walked the recovery path before and at some time seemed to have stopped taking drugs and recorded a song dubbed Guchi Denda with Oskid but relapsed there after.

The musician is currently admitted at a rehabilitation facility called FASAA, (Fight Against Substance and Addiction) in Norton.

Speaking to The Standard Style on the sidelines of his performance he said: "It's a blessing to be back on stage and I give thanks to the support I'm getting from fans throughout my journey and the destination is pure.

"I thought that I was not ready to be back on stage, but I was amused and chuffed when the crowd was responding to the music," he said.

The artiste urged youths to desist from drugs and substances.

"I have been sober for two months and this is the beginning of the new Dobba Don, and I urge the youths to stop drugs because they are not nice for your health and life," he said.

"Always know that God is there for us. Whatever we need, God is there to provide."

Shingirayi Mangwenzi of FASAA said the artiste is responding well to rehabilitation.

"Dobba Don is going through rehabilitation and he will be there till he is fully well and he is currently responding well to it," he said.

"We will be supporting him throughout the journey and he knows that we are family. We have a lot of music to share with his fans, and he will be releasing his album on December 24."

Known scientifically as methamphetamine, crystal meth is a highly addictive stimulant used for its powerful euphoric effects. It goes by street names such as Mutoriro, dombo, guka, gukamakafella, and many other names.

This year artistes such as Saintfloew and Delroy Shewe openly revealed that they were drug and substance addicts that needed help.

Saintfloew was recently in a rehabilitation facility in South Africa for a month, before coming back. He has since released an album.
