Shurugwi MP bolsters community sustainability programmes

SHURUGWI North MP Joseph Mpasi

SHURUGWI North MP Joseph Mpasi is spearheading a constituency future development plan focused on agriculture, social welfare, education, infrastructure and health sectors.

The move is aimed at building resilience within communities in the face of climate change.

“We received good rains during the past rainy season and we are expecting a bumper harvest across the constituency,” Mpasi said.

“Going forward, we want to plan our work focusing on climate change and how it could impact our lives. Thus, I am talking of us bolstering community sustainability.”

Mpasi has over the past few weeks presided over field days in wards 12, 17 and 19.

He said his office came up with a development plan that focused on thematic areas including agriculture, social welfare, education, infrastructure and health.

“We received our Constituency Development Fund for 2024, which we will channel towards developmental projects, prioritising incomplete projects from the Ninth Parliament,” he said.

“These include completing flat bridges in wards 4 and 22. Under the current Parliament, we will facilitate the roofing of a classroom block at Chironde School in ward 19, complete an ECD classroom block at DomboraMwari, roof a classroom block at Musavezi Primary School and supply building material for the construction of Dombwe Clinic.”

Mpasi said his target was to empower youth in Shurugwi North through mining and other income-generating projects.

“We will engage youths in and around Shurugwi town through contract mining. Some have started doing carpentry while others are into welding and farming,” he said.

The MP said they  initiated savings clubs for women under the Fushai programme, where groups of 15 women receive US$500 each from the MP coffers for projects.

There are also 22 disadvantaged children benefiting from the MP’s education support fund.
