Hwange theatre group in arts preservation drive

The project focuses on developing kids from schools' traditional dance, accapela, theatre and radio drama among others

HWANGE GROUP — Vulindlela Theatre Company has embarked on a project — Kubambanyila Ramangwana MuTheatre Mudunhu LekaHwange (preparing theatre for tomorrow in Hwange) aimed at making sure that theatre activities do not die”.

The project focuses on developing kids from schools' traditional dance, accapela, theatre and radio drama among others. Vulindlela programmes administrator, George Chivhunga confirmed the development to Standard Style yesterday.

“The project has gone viral in the community of Hwange and parents with the kids involved in the project have received it with open arms," he said.

“Our aim is to make sure that theatre activities in Hwange do not die when we are gone. We will make sure that the kids whom we are training will have to take this up, that is why we are going into the schools.”

He said Hwange only has two theatre groups which are into drama, music, dance and this made them go into schools to pass on knowledge to the next generation.

“By the end of this year, we want to see Hwange community having more than 10 groups. So far we have gone to Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls, Mabhinga Primary School, Nechibondo Primary School, Coal Fields, Lwendulu Primary School, Hwange Government High School and Chilisa Secondary School,"  said Chivhungal.

“We will be teaching them traditional dance, urban dance, drama, poems and stage management. The response is so pleasing and we wish to keep monitoring them so that they don't lose focus.

“The kids should know that one can make a living and create employment for others through."
