Last week, I tuned in to a local radio station just in time to hear a powerful discussion featuring renowned entrepreneur and banker Nigel Chanakira.
He was sharing wisdom on success and his words were thought provoking and deeply inspiring.
He emphasised the importance of specialisation — how becoming an expert in a certain field can be the key to unlocking true success.
According to Chanakira, people who strive to be the best in their area of expertise are more likely to achieve greatness, while those who remain average struggle in a saturated and highly competitive space.
This conversation resonated with me because it underscored a truth that many people overlook: the world rewards excellence.
Whether in business, sports, academics or any other field, those who distinguish themselves through exceptional skill, knowledge and consistency rise to the top.
The bottom, on the other hand, is congested with mediocrity and competition is intense while opportunities are scarce.
In today’s world, generalists struggle while specialists thrive. Companies seek employees who possess unique and refined skills rather than those with a shallow understanding of multiple disciplines.

The modern economy values expertise because it leads to efficiency and innovation.
Take the medical field, for instance. A general practitioner may earn a decent living, but a neurosurgeon who has spent years honing a particular skill commands higher pay and greater respect.
The same applies to other industries — law, engineering, or the arts, specialists always stand out.
The age-old saying “Jack of all trades master of none” perfectly captures the risk of failing to specialise.
While versatility has its benefits, it is mastery that truly brings success.
Consider the fastest athlete of all time — Usain Bolt. He did not train in all track and field events. Instead, he focused on sprinting and became the fastest man in history.
Likewise, entrepreneurs such as Strive Masiyiwa built their fortunes by dedicating themselves to a specific industry and excelling in it.
The bottom of any industry is always crowded with people who perform at an average level. These are the individuals who take shortcuts, avoid self-improvement and settle for the bare minimum.
In contrast, the top is less crowded because few are willing to put in the effort required to attain excellent. This is why striving for mastery is not an option but a necessity.
The job market today is more competitive than ever. Thousands of graduates flood the market each year, but only a few secure high-paying, fulfilling jobs.
Gentle reader, the difference lies in skill level, expertise and the ability to provide unique value.
Employers and clients alike are constantly searching for the best and those who fail to distinguish themselves are left behind.
Similarly, in business, competition at the lower levels is cutthroat. Small businesses that offer generic products or services struggle to survive, while those that innovate and specialise in a niche thrive.
A bakery that offers generic bread will find it hard to compete, but one that specialises in artisan bread for a niche market commands premium prices and builds customer loyalty.
How to rise to the top
Identify your passion and strengths — Success begins with self-awareness. Identify what you are truly passionate about and what you are naturally good at. Your strengths will determine where you can excel and passion will keep you motivated even when challenges arise.
Continuous learning — Mastery is not achieved overnight. It requires continuous learning, practice and improvement. Read books, take courses, attend seminars and seek mentorship from those who have succeeded in your chosen field. The more knowledge and skills you acquire, the more valuable you become. If you stop reading, you stop leading.
Build a reputation for excellence — People and businesses are drawn to those who are known for their expertise and reliability. Consistently delivering high-quality work builds a strong reputation, which in turn attracts better opportunities. Whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur, strive to exceed expectations.
Network with the right people — Success is not only about what you know but also about who you know. Surround yourself with people who are at the top of their fields. Learn from them, collaborate with them and let their success inspire you to push beyond your limits.
Embrace discipline and hard work — Excellence requires discipline, dedication and perseverance. The road to the top is not easy it is littered with setbacks. However, those who remain focused and persistent will ultimately achieve their goals.
Chanakira’s words were a reminder that success is not accidental — it is intentional. Those who aim for the top by specialising and mastering their craft will always have the edge over those who remain mediocre. The world does not reward those who blend in; it rewards those who stand out.

The higher you rise, the fewer competitors you will have and the more opportunities you will attract. So, aim for the top floor; the bottom is crowded, but there is plenty of room at the summit. Arise and shine!
