Byo South Rotary Club bails out Nkayi school

Club president Nonhlanhla Mguni told Southern Eye that the rural school is situated in a mine area 60km from Bulawayo along Nkayi Road.

THE Rotary Club of Bulawayo South has equipped Somvubu High School in Nkayi district with science laboratory equipment, a move meant to boost the school’s pass rate.

Club president Nonhlanhla Mguni told Southern Eye that the rural school is situated in a mine area 60km from Bulawayo along Nkayi Road.

“We donated school furniture and we have managed to equip the science laboratory after the school had introduced A Level studies to cater for the students who would have passed their O Level examinations,” Mguni said.

“This comes at a time when only students with A Level passes are able to continue to be enrolled at our universities. It is, indeed, a good initiative though a number of challenges are currently being faced.”

She mentioned that the school serves a large area and has an enrolment of on average 800 learners per year.

“Being a rural school, Somvubu has not been spared the challenges that the country is currently facing and during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was affected as well when schools did not open as scheduled. It also faces limited resources,” she said.

The Rotary Club of Bulawayo South past president Jacob Nyathi added that they supported the school on two occasions.

“First, we supplied school desks for class rooms and last year, we furnished their A Level science laboratory. The total cost for the two initiatives was US$12 000,” he said.

School development committee chairperson Samkeliso Mutyambizi welcomed the donation and paid tribute to the Rotary club.

“The school had appealed for a donation and the Rotary club responded by donating furniture to the school. We now have a fully equipped science laboratory with a high standard,” Mutyambizi said.

“The pass rate rose from 7% depending on the subject to about 100% depending on the subject, giving a total of more than 50% on average.”
