SOME churches in Bulawayo recently came together and donated various goods to Khami Prison in a bid to create a good relationship with inmates. In an interview, Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe pastor Mbongeni Dube told Southern Eye that three churches came together to emphasise the importance of faith and compassion for those behind bars.
He said the churches also visited the prison to preach the gospel and donate necessities such as food and sanitary items crucial for inmates.
He said the outreach extended beyond Khami Prison, as they visited several correctional facilities across Zimbabwe.
“We have built a relationship with prisons, where authorities reach out to us with requests for various necessities. We collaborate with different churches, including the Methodist Church, Lutheran Church and Christ Remedy Ministries, to gather resources,” Dube said.
Lutheran Church member Estina Mashingayidze said they started the initiative in 2009.
“We do this because many inmates have no one to visit them. It is our way of showing love and compassion,” she said.Christ Remedy Ministries pastor Mzingaye Moyo said prisoners felt neglected hence they donated essentials to support them.“
Our visits aim to strengthen inmates spiritually and give them hope for a better future,” he said.
