IN response to the rising number of cancer related deaths in Zimbabwe, the West Zimbabwe Conference of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church is taking a proactive stand by hosting a community cancer awareness campaign week at Bulawayo City Hall.

The event is set to bring together health experts, cancer survivors, community members and government representatives in a united effort to educate and empower the public.

Health ministries director for the West Zimbabwe Conference, Khumbulani Ncube, emphasised the urgent need for increased awareness, noting that the spike in cancer fatalities is closely linked to a widespread lack of knowledge.

“This is a ringing siren that needs a response, we hope this event will help the community understand cancer risk factors and promote essential prevention strategies like screening and early detection,” he said.

Ncube said the campaign promises a dynamic programme, including powerful survivor testimonies and addresses from various guest speakers, including representatives from cancer societies.

"Officials from the Matabeleland North provincial medical director’s offices will also be there to educate individuals on the real life impact of cancer while offering practical tools for prevention and early diagnosis,” he said.

Ncube said in keeping with global tradition, the event will adopt pink as its official colour code, a hue that has become widely recognised in Zimbabwe as a symbol of cancer awareness and prevention.

“This city-wide initiative is open to everyone, with the entire Bulawayo community encouraged to attend. It is not only a day of learning and inspiration but a call to action a reminder that awareness can save lives.”
