Glassblock dam to solve Bulawayo’s water crisis

BULAWAYO councillor, Donaldson Mabutho, says the proposed Bopoma Glassblock dam remains the only solution to the city’s water challenges.

Mabutho said this is because the Gwayi-Shangani dam project, which is seen as a long lasting solution, is taking ages to complete.

The dam project was first mooted in 1912.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa had promised to ensure that the dam is commissioned ahead of the 2023 elections.

Since then, several deadlines have been missed.

The council now pins hopes on the proposed Bopoma Glassblock dam in Filabusi, Matabeleland South province.

“The Glassblock dam will actually solve our water crisis,” Mabutho told Mpopoma residents during a feedback meeting last week.

“We have been saying Bulawayo must be declared a water crisis city, and here is another initiative, which can actually improve the worsening water situation in Bulawayo.”

The proposed dam, with a holding capacity of 129 million cubic metres, will become the seventh water supply dam for the city once completed.
