Matobo gets university

THE Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education has approved the proposed University of Matopo, a development which has been applauded by the people of Matabeleland.

THE Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (Zimche) has approved the proposed University of Matopo, a development which has been applauded by the people of Matabeleland.

In a letter dated January 9 2025, addressed to Professor Henry Sibanda who applied for the university, Zimche chief executive Peter Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo said the institute would be established in Matobo district, Matabeleland South province.

Sibanda recently applied for permission to register and build a private university in Matobo to be named University of Matopo.

“We are pleased to inform you that the application by the proposed University of Matopo to register was approved by the Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee of Zimche. The proposed University of Matopo is hereby granted provisional registration,” Dzvimbo said.

“The provisional registration shall be valid for one year from the date of issue which is January 10, 2025, to January 10, 2026.”

Dzvimbo said the provisional registration authorised the university to set up a governing body for the proposed higher education institution, commence or continue to develop physical facilities, commence or continue to assemble academic resources and submit academicc programmes the institution intends to offer for consideration and approval by Zimche.

“Please note that the institution will only recruit students after specific approval by Zimche to do so.

“On or before the expiry of the provisional registration licence the University of Matopo shall apply to Zimche for final registration by submitting to the CEO the prescribed form accompanied by such documents and fee as shall be prescribed,” he said.

Dzvimbo expressed hope that Sibanda will achieve the aims and objectives for which the private institution will be  established, adding that Zimche would be available to assist the university’s authority.

The University of Matopo will be the second institute of higher learning established in Matabeleland South after Gwanda State University.

It will be the first private university in the province.
