Hwange threatens debtors

Hwange Local Board

THE Hwange Local Board (HLB) has resorted to legal processes to recover outstanding payments from defaulting ratepayers.

HLB chairperson, Morrison Mafa, said this had resulted in an improvement in revenue collection compared to previous years.

"I must say we are satisfied with the increase in revenue we are witnessing,” Mafa said.

"As you might be quite aware, one of the reasons that led to the rejection of our 2024 budget was ineffective revenue collection, but I'm glad we are now turning over a new leaf."

Mafa highlighted the need for council to exhaust all means necessary to recover outstanding payments from defaulters.

"There are some unscrupulous individuals that have told themselves that they are connected and won't pay rates,” he said.

“Lest they forget, we as a local authority are empowered by the constitution to make everyone pay rates.
