Armed robbery gang on the run

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko

A GANG of six men is on the run after robbing a Gweru family of cash and valuables worth approximately US$12 000.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on January 26 in the Harben Park residential area, Gweru.

Mahoko said 60-year-old Mary Chakamanga and her son had retired to bed when the gang attempted to break a door to gain entry to the house and failed.

It broke window panes and entered the house.

Inside, the robbers demanded money.

“Chakamanga handed over US$500 to them,” Mahoko said.

“They ransacked the house and took US$200 in cash from the complainant’s handbag, four cellphones, an iPad, a Huawei tablet, an HP laptop and some groceries.

“They assaulted her with an iron rod and demanded more money.”

Mahoko said the robbers demanded keys to a Toyota Rav 4 motor vehicle which was parked outside.

“They loaded the loot into the car and drove away,” he said.

The vehicle was discovered the next morning parked along a dirt road near Go Beer farm in Northlea, Gweru, with the battery missing.

“Total value stolen is US$11 980,” Mahoko said.

“We are appealing to anyone with information that can help in the investigation of the case to approach any police station.”
