Unregistered buses worry residents

BULAWAYO commuters have raised concern over unlicensed buses plying intra-city routes saying they are putting the lives of many at risk.

This publication gathered that some of the buses have Zupco stickers to deceive commuters.

In February this year, Zupco terminated contracts for privately owned intra-city buses because of poor business.

Zimbabwe Passengers Association (ZPA) secretary general Paul Makiwa said they had observed that many of the buses continue plying different routes with Zupco stickers.

“This means these buses are violating road safety rules and putting commuters at risk,” Makiwa said.

He said some of the buses are not registered as per the Vehicle Registration Act and do not have legitimate documentation.

“’They also do not have vehicle fitness certificates as well as passenger insurance policies,” Makiwa said.

Zupco spokesperson Sandisiwe Mtetwa did not respond to email questions despite promises to do so.
