GOVERNMENT yesterday said the first phase of the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals renovations to give the health institution a modern outlook would be completed in September.
“We hope by the beginning of September, the first block will be through,” Health and Child Care minister Douglas Mombeshora said during a site visit yesterday.
“Also, there was a lot of work that needed to be done, which still needs to be done, because there are many patches taking place.”
The renovations started after President Emmerson Mnangagwa last month visited the institution unannounced and was confronted with a broken down health delivery system and decaying infrastructure. The country’s health delivery service suffers from years of neglect and underfunding.
The crisis in the health sector is compounded by a mass exodus of experienced health professionals who are quitting their jobs in numbers protesting poor salaries and working conditions.
“The next phase will be the main hospital, but we think for the main hospital, will be done in phases, because we can’t close the hospital,” Mombeshora said.
“Already, some preliminary work is being done to assess the damages, so that a comprehensive plan is brought forward for implementation.”
Mombeshora, however, could not give a time-frame for the completion of the renovations, which are being done by a private company with funding from the government.
