Schoolteacher-cum- musician stirs waves

Kufakunesu is not only carving his name in the music industry but has also helped students at his school to form a music band.

NKAYI secondary schoolteacher, Kudakwashe Kufakunesu, also known by stage name KK, has become a force to reckon with in the sungura music genre circles after his song Musha Mukadzi topped the Zimbabwe Online Radios and Ridza Tinzwe FM online charts in the past weeks.

Kufakunesu, who teaches history, economic history and geography at Hlangabeza High School, last year recorded his first album, Mwandabvu Wemoyo and the hit song Musha Mukadzi is one of his top songs.

"Musha Mukadzi won a certificate in Ridza  Tinzwe FM online radio competitions and was number one for three consecutive weeks,"Kufakunesu told NewsDay Life & Style.

"The song also won a certificate from the Zimbabwe Online Radios at the competitions of all online radios in Zimbabwe."

Kufakunesu is not only carving his name in the music industry but has also helped students at his school to form a music band.

“At Hlangabeza High I helped students to form a music band and early this year they (students) recorded their first single titled Ukusebenza Akubulali,” he said.

“Our school music group has represented Matabeleland North on many occasions including at the National Annual Science, Sports and Arts Festival  in Gweru and Chinhoyi in 2023 and 2024, respectively. I am nurturing these students to reach greater heights in music."

Born 46 years ago in Masvingo, Kufakunesu said he started his music career in 1990 when he played a guitar for the first time when he was in Grade 5.

In 2021 he formed a band, Extra Logic and during the same year recorded his first single titled Imba Yako, in which he played rhythm and provided vocals.

Last year he recorded his first album Mwandabvu Wemoyo with eight tracks including songs such as Chipo Manhanga, Kodzero Chiringazuva, Mwandabvu Wefungwa, Mada Kufuma, Pangu Pangu, Silobela and the hit song, Musha Mukadzi.

Kufakunesu said he staged live shows, in Nkayi, Esigodini and Bulawayo and felt encouraged by his fans during his performances.

He said he was working on an album which he expected to be released next year in April.
