BULAWAYO-BASED rising musician and producer Kelvin “KelvinwithaKay” Mbambo says artistes should embrace culture and always incorporate it when composing songs for them to gain impetus in and outside the city.
The soft-spoken KelvinwithaKay began his career in 2020 after the late CalVin Mgcini Nhliziyo co-signed him to his music stable.
“I have worked with artistes who are very talented and they always stand out when it comes to their work. They are different in their own ways hence I do not feel like they should change anything, but they need to include culture in their music,” he told NewsDay Life & Style.
Mbambo reckoned that he was motivated by the late CalVin to become a music producer.
“I wanted to rap at first then came a problem, I did not have instrumentals that fitted my raps. Hence this also pushed me to start creating beats on my own,” he noted.
“What really made me venture into music was seeing and also listening to songs that the late Nhliziyo did which at most touched a lot of people. Even with the way people related to his music, it challenged me to be a music producer.”
In the next decade, KelvinwithaKay wishes to see himself producing music for international artistes.
“I need to have gained more momentum locally in such a way that artistes from other countries will want to work with me,” he said.

KelvinwithaKay feels that the industry is not recognising producers. He feels producers also need to be acknowledged through various awards just like what is being done to musicians.
