Chevrons series win refreshing

Editorials
Craig Ervine laid the platform for Zimbabwean innings with his crucial 60 Pitcure by Cricket Ireland

The Zimbabwe national cricket team, Chevrons, finally remembered how to win a One Day International series when they defeated the touring Ireland last week.

This was after a disappointing defeat in a one-off Test that was played in Bulawayo.

It had been almost two years since they won a series until the 2-1 win over the Irish.

It was a refreshing sight to see the Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine hoist a series trophy.

What was particularly impressive was the way different players stepped up in the series to help the team.

First Brian Bennett celebrated his maiden ODI century after an entertaining 169 off just 163 balls to push Zimbabwe to a competitive score of 299  in 50 overs.

Blessing Muzarabani then backed that up with the ball as he took 4 for 51 to help to restrict Ireland to 49 runs shy of their target.

Zimbabwe lost the second ODI by six wickets, but Wessly Madhevere proved that he had left behind his past problems with a well-played half-century.

In the decider, it was Ben Curran who stole the show with an unbeaten 118.

Questions had started to emerge about his spot in the team but he put that to rest with a carefully constructed century.

In the end, Bennett had the most individual runs in the series after accumulating 247 while Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Mark Adair of Ireland had a total of six wickets each.

Zimbabwe received a lot of praise from their fervent fans.

Tougher challenges await them during the year with a tour to Bangladesh coming up next where their schedule has been revised to two Tests after white ball cricket was scrapped.

We wish them well and hope they will fight for a positive outcome.

After that, there is the tough and historic tour to England for a one-off Test.

That is yet another opportunity to show the world that Zimbabwe, indeed, are capable cricket players.

On the schedule are incoming tours of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in a year that is packed with international cricket for the Chevrons.

We implore them to keep the momentum so that they can improve their rankings.

They jumped a couple of places to settle on the 11th position in the ODI rankings, they should push further so that in future they don't miss out on tournaments such as the ICC Champions Trophy and the World Cup.
