EIGHT promising young golfers from Emmanuel College in Harare have embarked on a quest for glory, as they represent their school and nation at the prestigious Junior Africa Challenge.

The tournament, a continental showcase of junior golfing talent, teed off this morning at the San Lameer Golf Resort in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

The team, which departed Harare on Saturday, includes Jonathan Musiiwa, Ethan Gwaze, Leenly Nyamajiwa Meagan Chidavaenzi, Bright Kanhema, Melissa Muganda, Listia Bangura and Tadiwanashe Nyanyirai.

They are set to compete over three rounds of intense competition, with the final prize-giving ceremony scheduled for the conclusion of the third round on Thursday.

Organised by SA Kids Golf, the Junior Africa Challenge, which started running yesterday and ends on Friday, has attracted a truly international field with countries such as France, Ireland, England, Germany, Brazil, Canada, China and Thailand, among others, represented.

Emmanuel College’s golf team patron Charles Kamba expressed immense pride in the students’ achievement, noting that their participation is a testament to their dedication and skill.

“Our junior golfers left Harare on Saturday for SA Kids Junior Golf Challenge, which is one of the biggest junior golf tournaments in Africa,” he said.

“This is an international tournament where we have the whole of Africa competing.

“It is one of Africa’s top-notch international junior tournaments, which is a pride of African junior golf as well.”

The golfers earned their spot in this elite competition through their strong performance at a qualifying event held earlier this year.

“As Emmanuel College Harare, we are happy to have our kids qualifying. This time around, we have eight of them qualify for this tournament,” Kamba said.

“They qualified for this tournament through the World Cup qualifier that they played around February this year.

“So we are delighted to have them taking part in this tournament. And this time around we hope they are going to be excellent at this big stage.”

The stakes are high for the young athletes, as the Junior Africa Challenge serves as a key qualifier for a host of other prestigious international tournaments.

Top performers will secure a spot in events such as the Swing Mojing Junior World Championships, the Australian Junior Golf Championship, the Champions of Champions, Asian Junior Masters, and the Callaway Junior World Cup Championship.

Following the main competition, the top golfers will have another opportunity to shine when they take part in the Dunbar Cup, an international tournament scheduled for Friday.

The stage is set for an epic three-day battle on the beautiful Indian Ocean coastline, and all eyes will be on the talented youngsters as they aim to make their mark on the international stage.
