Why I launched Trevor & Associates

Trevor & Associates

IN a world fracturing along fault lines of ideology, economics, and geopolitics, I have made a decision that some might call ambitious, others necessary.

I have launched Trevor & Associates www.trevorandassociates.com not merely as strategic communications, reputation management and advocacy consultancy, but as a commitment to principled leadership for southern Africa and beyond in an era that desperately demands it.

Let me be direct: we live in a time of unprecedented crisis. Trust is eroding. Dialogue is devolving into diatribe.

In this “post-truth” landscape — where artificial intelligence (AI) can generate falsehoods faster than human wisdom can counter them — leaders face not just operational challenges, but existential reputational threats.

Too many business leaders compromise core values for short-term peace with politicians.

Too many sacrifice long-term reputation on the altar of immediate profit.

This approach is not just ethically questionable — it is strategically flawed.

When leaders abandon principles for expediency, they undermine the very foundation of sustainable success.

Climate change and inequality are not passing crises — they are permanent features of our landscape that will require principled leadership for decades to come.

These challenges cannot be countered with public relations gestures or corporate social responsibility window-dressing.

They demand authentic engagement and difficult choices.

Similarly, AI presents both an unprecedented opportunity and significant reputational risk.

AI can either amplify human potential or deepen societal divides, depending on how it is governed and deployed.

Clear-eyed, ethical communication about these technologies is not optional — it is essential for organisations that wish to maintain trust in an increasingly sceptical world.

Business leaders who compromise values for short-term advantage make a catastrophic miscalculation.

When reputation is sacrificed for quarterly profits, the damage extends far beyond balance sheets.

It erodes the trust that is the true currency of sustainable business.

It weakens the legitimacy that gives organisations the licence to operate.

At Trevor & Associates, we reject this false economy.

We believe that principled leadership is not just morally right but strategically essential.

In a world where nothing happens in secret — where every misstep is livestreamed and every inconsistency is scrutinised — integrity is no longer just virtuous.

It is practical.

The growing polarisation in international relations is not inevitable — it is a choice. And it is the wrong choice.

There is infinitely more that unites the human family than divides it: our shared vulnerability to climate change, our common aspirations for security and prosperity, our universal desire for dignity and respect.

Trevor & Associates stands firmly for diplomacy over division, dialogue over diatribe and collaboration over confrontation.

We reject the false narrative that nations or businesses must prosper at each other’s expense.

Sustainable prosperity comes through exchange, not isolation; through the outbreak of trade, not the erection of tariffs.

Trevor & Associates will work with clients to strategically navigate complex challenges while making tough ethical choices for a sustainable future.

We will help business leaders to articulate values that transcend expediency and build reputations resilient enough to weather crises.

Our approach is grounded in the recognition that communication is not a postscript to decision-making but its very foundation.

When done strategically, communication is leadership. It is action. It is behaviour. It is clarity when the world is confused. It is dignity when the world is divided.

At the heart of our work lies the wisdom captured by Saint Francis: “Grant that I may not so much seek to be understood as to understand.”

In a world where everyone is broadcasting but few are receiving, this principle has never been more revolutionary.

Zimbabwe exemplifies both the challenges and possibilities of our age — a nation in crisis, yes, but also one of extraordinary resilience and potential.

Southern Africa and, indeed, the rest of the continent, stands at a crossroads, where visionary leadership could unlock unprecedented regional co-operation and prosperity.

Trevor & Associates begins its work here, but our vision extends to our common human destiny.

Because the truth that guides our work is simple yet profound: either we rise together or we falter separately.

Trevor & Associates represents the culmination of over 36 years of experience, leadership and relationship-building across the globe.

It is built upon a network forged through decades of strategic communication, business leadership and public engagement — designed to serve the needs of a fast-evolving world.

In launching this venture, I am under no illusions about the magnitude of the challenges ahead.

But I am equally clear about the alternative: to stand aside as spectators while forces of division, short-termism and cynicism shape our collective future.

Instead, Trevor & Associates chooses to meet this moment with wholehearted engagement — bringing ethical clarity and strategic vision to leaders, in boardrooms and elsewhere, ready to make a difference.

Because in the end, the antidote to today's exhaustion and complexity is not retreat.

It is, as Irish poet David Whyte reminds us, wholeheartedness.
