THE late 2022 JCI Zimbabwe National training director Mubu Delorne Mubu has been honoured posthumously for his unselfish dedication and devotion to creating positive change at the recent JCI World Congress that was held in Zurich, Switzerland.
Time flies, it was exactly a year ago that I penned his obituary titled Mubu Delorne Mubu: A Rising Star Gone Too Soon which was published on the 27th of November 2022 exactly a week after his death.
A great emerging and influential young leader within Zimbabwe and abroad, Mubu died on the 19th of November 2022 in a horrific road accident close to Mutangadura on his way to an early morning marathon.
At the recently ended JCI World Congress Mubu was honoured with the Joaquin V Gonzalez Memorial Award which is given posthumously to recognize the outstanding service of a JCI Member who would have died during the JCI year. An official request from the JCI National President of the particular country where that member came from will be required and the award will be presented at the JCI National Congress to the representative(s) of JCI from that particular country where the deceased hailed from.
Mubu’s posthumous recognition award was collected by the 2023 JCI Zimbabwe President, Samuel Nehumba who had flown to represent Zimbabwe at this year's JCI World Congress.
Posting on its Facebook page JCI Zimbabwe stated, “It’s hard to remember that a year has passed since our dear friend Mubu Delorne Mubu passed away. We still miss his infectious smile, his unwavering positivity and his boundless energy. He was a true leader, and he inspired so many of us to be better people and to do better in the world.
We remember him with great fondness and respect, and we will always be grateful for the impact he had on our lives and on the organization, he led with such grace and distinction till death. Today we honour his memory and renew our commitment to the values he stood for”
In my obituary last year, I captured his life, work and accomplishments and his immense impact in creating positive change and expressed how his life had been cut at its prime as he was one young man who was on his way to the top.

As a great associate and friend, he would make a periodic courtesy call to pop in at the office just to check up on me and would always leave positive affirmations both in good and bad days that he saw growth and would assure me of his continued support.
Mubu lived and moved in a world of endless possibilities and was intentional about everything he did. He left nothing to chance. He moved with speed and direction and was destined for greatness.
As I reflected on the ups and downs of this year, it dawned upon me the vacuum he left both on a personal level and to the community he served through positive affirmations and could feel the quietness he left including to JCI and other organisations and networks where he made immense contribution.
An accountant by profession, Mubu held a degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford University and had been elected the 2023 JCI Zimbabwe Vice President at the time of his death.
Affectionately known as the Game Changer, Mubu was the epitome of servitude leadership and made an investment in harnessing personal relationships both within Zimbabwe and abroad.
At the time of his death in 2022, he had established networks and shared presentations on Global platforms including being one of the youngest JCI World Congress Trainers, earning a 2020 JCI Africa and Middle East Most Outstanding Member Nominee eventually coming off as the first runner-up and being a graduate of the 2019 JCI Africa and Middle East Active Citizenship Academia from Balaclava, Mauritius.
It is Emily Potter who interestingly observed “Heroes don’t die, they live in the hearts of those who would follow in their footsteps” and to me Mubu resembles such a Hero and his latest recognition in death validates this assertion.
