Norton youths foster social change through modelling

The youths are introduced to many empowering skills besides modelling

IN a bid to curb social decay in Norton, youths led by modelling instructor Munyaradzi Zulu (28) are using platforms such as modelling to engage communities.

Zulu has hosted the annual finale pageants in Norton in the past two years with the recent one held on December 30.

"The basic idea is to use modelling to mobilise and create a friendly environment for adolescent girls so that they can exchange skills, knowledge and culture. So we scout for models and aspiring models around Zimbabwe, register them and start training them as far as modelling is concerned. they enroll for a six- month course that finishes with a certificate given to them," he said.

Besides modelling, Zulu said they introduce the youths to many empowering skills.

"We empower the young ladies through introducing them to opportunities like hairdressing, baking, beauty therapy and motor mechanic courses as well as workshops on entrepreneurship, gender-based violence, mental health and anti-drug abuse," he said.

The inaugural final held in 2021 at Pakare Paye Arts Centre was attended by Daisy Mtukudzi, the widow of legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi and Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Sakhile Dube among others. The 2022 edition was held on December 30.

Zulu hinted that they were looking forward to taking the project national and inspire every city and its youths to keep their societies clean from crime, drug abuse and mental health issues.
