LEGISLATORS have criticised government over its failure to electrify communities to drive rural industrialisation.
In an interview yesterday, Gwanda North legislator Desire Nkala said the government has been known for coming up with good projects, but falling short on implementation.
"Rural electrification has been an issue that has been preached by the government, but remains unfilled,” he said.
Nkala said rural electrification will catapult development.
“At the moment, due to a lack of rural electrification, we are failing to implement irrigation projects for the benefit of the villagers,” he added.
Nkala said the government must accelerate the solarisation programme in schools, which enables learners to access the internet.
"The absence of electricity in rural areas is hindering production," he said.
Tsholotsho North lawmaker Libion Sibanda underscored the importance of rural electrification, urging the government to undertake the project.

"The government has made many promises, but their failure to implement them is a significant concern,” Sibanda said.
He said the absence of electricity in schools limits students' ability to access quality education, including ICT training, which is crucial in today's digital age.
"The schools' poor pass rate is a cause for concern, indicating that students are struggling to meet academic standards," Sibanda said.
Legislators made the call in response to Energy and Power Development minister July Moyo’s remarks that the government is committed to electrifying rural areas.
