Zifa’s Kadewere gamble backfires: Warriors star ruled out of Unity Cup

Tino Kadewere

Tino Kadewere will not travel to London for Zimbabwe’s Unity Cup campaign.

Just five days before the Warriors face Nigeria in their semi-final at The Valley, Zifa confirmed on Wednesday that the forward has been ruled out through injury—a setback occurring only weeks after his return to club action with Aris Thessaloniki.

Washington Navaya has been drafted into the squad as his replacement. While the timing is undeniably damaging, the situation raises a critical question: did Zifa do its homework before naming Kadewere in the first place?

The striker’s medical record over the past 18 months makes for uncomfortable reading.

He suffered a calf injury in September 2024, followed by a muscle tear in November that sidelined him until April 2025.

Most recently, a serious knee injury in October 2025 required surgery for a torn medial meniscus, keeping him out until January 2026.

Having only just returned to competitive football, his inclusion in the 24-man squad on May 11 appears, in hindsight, to have been a significant oversight.

Zifa has yet to disclose the exact nature of the current injury or confirm if it is a recurrence of his knee issues.

These are questions that demand answers from the association’s medical team, whose identities have not been made public.

This situation follows a familiar pattern; Kadewere was absent from the squad in November 2024 after aggravating an injury against Marseille—a setback that led to unfounded online accusations regarding his fitness and commitment.

The broader squad crisis compounds the pressure on head coach Kaitano Tembo. In addition to Kadewere, Divine Lunga has been withdrawn due to Mamelodi Sundowns’ Caf Champions League final commitments, while Bill Antonio has asked to be excused for personal reasons. The loss of three experienced figures is a heavy blow.

While the subsequent inclusions of Navaya, Isheanesu Mauchi, and Prosper Padera allow the technical team to evaluate fringe players ahead of the 2027 Afcon qualifiers in September, such a framing feels optimistic given the circumstances.

Against a formidable Nigerian side, the Warriors will desperately miss structure and a clinical edge in attack.

Tembo enters this tournament with almost no preparation time. This Unity Cup squad is his first as head coach, following the resignation of Marian Marinica.

He inherits a side that struggled at Afcon 2025 and now arrives in London missing three key personnel from his original selection.

The decision to select Kadewere, despite his recent surgery and limited match fitness, was either an act of blind faith or a failure of due diligence. ZifaA has not clarified which—but it certainly should
