Match Summary — South Africa 418 for 9 dec (Pretorius 153, Bosch 100*, Chivanga 4-83) and 49 for 1 (Mulder 25*, de Zorzi 22*) lead Zimbabwe 251 (Williams 137, Mulder 4-50, Yusuf 3-42) by 216 runs

SEAN Williams waged a lone battle, scoring just above half of Zimbabwe's first innings total, as the hosts succumbed to 251 all out in response to South Africa's 418/9 declared on the second day of the first Test match at Queens Sports Club yesterday.

At stumps on day two, South Africa were on 49/1, having faced 13 overs and led Zimbabwe by 216 runs after an early end due to bad light, with still seven overs to play in the day.

After South Africa declared on 418/9, Zimbabwe went about chasing the visitors' total, but lost opener Brian Bennett (19), who retired hurt.

Bennett, however, could not return to bat again and has been ruled out of the ongoing Test match due to concussion. Williams and Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine went on to rebuild the innings, adding 96 runs for the third wicket, before Ervine departed for 36.

However, Williams showed composure, getting to his sixth Test hundred before being stumped by South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne for a well-played 137 (164) laced with 16 boundaries.

Vincent Masekesa chipped in with an unbeaten 11 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 251 runs. Wiaan Mulder was the pick of the South African bowlers, taking four wickets for 50 runs from 16 overs.

Test debutant Codi Yusuf and South African captain Keshav Maharaj picked three wickets apiece.

Zimbabwe had a good start with the ball in South Africa's second innings, with Tanaka Chivanga picking the wicket of Matthew Breetzke, caught by Wesley Madhevere.

Tony de Zorzi (22*) and Mulder are set to resume the day's batting on day three this morning.
