Farmers urged to adopt cluster farming

Foreign Affairs deputy minister Sheillah Chikomo

FARMERS in Mwenezi East, Masvingo province, have been urged to adopt cluster farming to increase production so that they can boost food security and export surplus grain.

This was said during a community empowerment programme led by Foreign Affairs deputy minister Sheillah Chikomo at Mucheni business centre recently.

Chikomo, who is also the Mwenezi East legislator, donated food hampers and kitchen utensils. Farmers, who gathered for the event had the opportunity to listen to ZimTrade’s eastern region manager Admire Jongwe, who was part of Chikomo’s delegation.

He encouraged farmers to work in clusters to produce in bulk for export.

“We encourage farmers to engage in cluster farming so that they can produce in bulk for export,” Jongwe said.

“This will eliminate middlemen who often buy grain at very low prices.”

He said ZimTrade would soon conduct training workshops in Mwenezi East to prepare farmers for export markets.

“Very soon, ZimTrade will be in the constituency rolling out workshops to capacitate farmers,” he said.

The empowerment programme is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen rural livelihoods through production-focused projects and access to markets, with government officials bringing stakeholders like ZimTrade closer to communities.
