THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) director-general Elta Nengomasha has challenged the country’s team to aim higher when they take part at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, this weekend.

The team, comprising Leeford Zuze, Gerren Muwishi, Aldrin Mafa and Dennis Hove, qualified for the event after a strong performance at the Lefika International Relays in Francistown, Botswana, in March.

“You are one of the few associations that hold junior championships and I know what you’re capable of and I’m more than confident that you will make us proud,” Nengomasha said.

She was speaking at the team’s send-off ceremony which was held at the New Ambassador Hotel in the capital.

“As the Sports and Recreation Commission are fully committed to ensure that the athletes are fully supported and having our team represent us at such a global stage, such a global forum, National Athletics is under one of our prioritised sport codes,” Nengomasha said.

“We are very mindful of the work that athletics has achieved in prior years and we are very positive about the trajectory of athletics in Zimbabwe. I’m excited that Zimbabwe is an anchor in the Olympics race with athletics.”

The event is set as a qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

National Athletes Association of Zimbabwe president Tendayi Tagara paid tribute to the team for representing Zimbabwe during the athletes farewell ceremony on Tuesday in Harare.

“Out of 54 countries in Africa, our boys are one of the six African countries that will be running in the 400 metres out of 82. Besides that, it means out of 214 countries that are underworld athletes, Zimbabwe is among one of the 32, which is a great achievement. I want to thank the boys for the effort and the spirit that they are showing,” Tagara said.

“There was a time when the athletes used to complain, but this group of athletes, they are very positive. I think it’s been almost six years since we last went to the 4x100. Botswana is hosting relays and our challenge is to have no less than three teams in Botswana.

“This platform, going to Guangzhou, is an opening opportunity for you to be recognised, to sponsors and others.”
