MIDLANDS police are hosting the 14th edition of the General-Commissioner of Police’s 21km road race which will be held at Mkoba Teacher’s College in Gweru on March 29.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the event is being sponsored by their perennial sponsor Old Mutual Zimbabwe, who have been supporting the event since 2014.

“Participants shall be drawn from members of the ZRP, other security services, clubs, schools, corporates and the general populace, including elite athletes and joggers,” he said.

“We expect a total of 1 000 athletes to grace the occasion and participate in the 5km, 10 km and 21km races.”

Mahoko said registration fee is US$20 and shall include T-shirts and meals.

“There are lots of prizes to be won in the following categories and the first 800 finishers will also receive medals, top 10 open category for both men and women with the winners walking away with cash prizes,” he said.

Mahoko said the award categories include top three for Junior men 10km category, tertiary category, wheelchair category, veterans category, masters/ mistress category and grandmasters/grand mistress category.

“The race is inclusive and open to everyone. Registration will be done online and registration link shall be shared in the earliest possible time,” he said.

“No registration shall be done on the race day.”

Mahoko said companies and institutions that wish to partner the force can render support in any area of their choice, at the same time marketing their products after paying a nominal fee to be agreed on.

“The previous edition was held at Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls and for the first time in the history of the race, two Kenyan nationals took part, an indication that the race is growing from strength to strength,” he said.
