
BULAWAYO Athletics Board (BAB) chairperson Watson Madanyika has urged athletes to start preparing for the National Junior Championships to be held at White City Stadium in the City of Kings and Queens on April 12.
The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz)-organised event will see athletes compete in various track and field events.
Madanyika emphasised on the importance of the national event.
“The Junior Championships are important because we will use them to select athletes to represent the country in the African Union Sports Council Region V Games to be held in Namibia in May,” he said.
Madanyika encouraged the athletes to take the competition seriously.
“If the athletes prepare well, record faster times and jump required heights, they will represent the country in Namibia.”
The BAB chairperson urged athletes to consider other benefits of the competition as well.
“Last year, seven athletes secured scholarships in United States universities and colleges,” he said.

“That is one of the reasons why participation and performing well in the events is important.”
Athletes from clubs, schools, universities, colleges and independent participants are expected on the day.
On offer will be the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 3 000m and 5 000m track races.
Other events include 100m hurdles, 4x100m relay completing the track events.
Athletes will also compete in field events which include long jump, high jump, triple Jump, javelin and discus
Registration and entry fee is US$2 per event per athlete and US$4 per relay team and the deadline for registration is April 4.
