Australia’s Matt Moss

THE Surge Energy Drink Summer Series came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday, with Australia’s Matt Moss stealing the show with a dominant performance in the MX1 class.

The event, sponsored by Scott Sakupwanya, the owner of Betterbrands Petroleum, marked an unforgettable weekend of motocross action at Harare’s Donnybrook.

It attracted top riders from around the world, all vying for supremacy in their respective categories.

Moss emerged as one of the standout performers, winning all nine motocross races and six supercross races to accumulate a total of 180 points.

His impressive performance left fans and fellow competitors in awe.

Moss’s victory was not the only highlight of the event. Local riders, including Emmanuel Bako, Victor Nyamupfukudza, and Judah Sakupwanya, showed promise and potential, hinting at a bright future for Zimbabwean motocross.

The event also featured a strong contingent of international riders, including competitors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, and France.

In the other categories, Jaxon Hadlow took top honours in the MX2 class with 163 points, while Ricky Whyte dominated the MX3 category with 171 points. Jadene DeLima was the overall winner in the Ladies section with 164 points, and Brett Bircher took the top spot in the Veterans category. Loftus Versfeld was the winner in the Masters category.

Selina Marira, one of the Surge Summer Series organisers, expressed her gratitude to the sponsors and participants.

“We are thrilled with the success of this year’s event and look forward to staging an even bigger and better Surge Summer Series next year,” she said.

The Surge Summer Series has become a flagship event for Betterbrands Petroleum, demonstrating the company's commitment to investing in local communities and promoting sports development.

Through its sponsorship, Betterbrands has helped to create a platform for Zimbabwean riders to compete against international opponents, gaining valuable experience and exposure.

Sakupwanya said he was “thrilled” to have been a part of this “incredible” event.

“The Surge Summer Series is a testament to the power of sports to bring people together and inspire greatness,” he said.

With its rich history and passionate fan base, motocross is poised to continue growing in popularity in Zimbabwe especially with so much support.

The 2024 Surge Summer Series will be remembered for its thrilling racing, impressive international participation, and showcase of local talent.

As the motocross community looks forward to next year’s event, one thing is certain — the Surge Summer Series is here to stay.
