Sables make history with gritty victory over South Korea

Sport
The Sables stormed out of the gates, with Ian Prior's precise penalty conversion in the second minute setting the tone.

THE Zimbabwe Sables etched their names into the annals of rugby history, capping an extraordinary unbeaten year with a nail-biting 27-22 triumph over South Korea in their decisive match of the Middle East and Asia tour in Incheon yesterday.

The Sables stormed out of the gates, with Ian Prior's precise penalty conversion in the second minute setting the tone.

Edward Sigauke's dazzling counter-attack sparked a breathtaking try from Tinotenda Mavesere in the fifth minute, leaving the South Korean defense reeling.

Aiden Burnett's powerful try in the 10th minute, converted by Prior, stretched the lead to 15-0.

Despite being reduced to 14 men due to a yellow card, South Korea demonstrated remarkable resilience.

A penalty in the 12th minute eased the pressure, and their determination paid off with a 31st minute try narrowing the deficit to 17-10 at halftime.

The rain-soaked second half witnessed South Korea's fierce comeback.

The Sables' defense, however, stood firm against wave after wave of attacks. Prior's strategic kicking and game management proved pivotal in maintaining Zimbabwe's slender lead.

As the clock ticked down, South Korea launched a desperate final assault.

Zimbabwe's defence, inspired by captain Hilton Mudariki and Simbarashe Mandioma's milestone achievements of 50 caps, repelled every advance.

When the final whistle blew, the Sables erupted in jubilation, their unbeaten year secured.

Sables head coach Piet Benade beamed with pride.

"This has been a dream year. Our players showed incredible character, discipline and unity," he said.

"South Korea pushed us, but our determination made the difference."

The Sables' flawless record cements their status as African champions and global contenders.

This gripping encounter at Incheon Stadium showcased the Sables' unyielding spirit, tactical prowess and dominance on the international stage.

With their perfect 2024 record, the Zimbabwe Sables have laid the foundation for future greatness. As they look to the horizon, one thing is clear: the Sables are no longer just contenders – they are champions.
