NAC ProAm raises US$25k for HIV and cancer response

Guest of honour and NAC programmes director Raymond Yekeye was pleased with the success of the event.

The eighth edition of the National AIDS Council (Nac) which concluded at Royal Harare on managed to raise over US$25 000 for HIV and cancer response.

A total of 72 professionals including three women and eight golfers from outside the country took part in the country’s top annual golf events.

Organisations that such as the Island Hospice and Healthcare, KIDZCAN and Cancer Association of Zimbabwe received US$5000 each during the awards ceremony.

Guest of honour and NAC programmes director Raymond Yekeye was pleased with the success of the event.

"Our objective with this tournament had always been to raise funds for HIV and Cancer response. We are happy to have raised over US$25 000 worth of funds which we will channel to organisations that we have worked with over the years," he said.

"As NAC we are happy to be one of the countries to have achieved our targets with regards to the fight against HIV and now our fight is against Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases. We are grateful to our esteemed  sponsors who have  made this event a success this year," he added.

Professional golfer Visitor Mapwanya won the tournament following a playoff against Brian Gondo after the golfers finished tied on 8-under par 208 after three rounds.

Mapwanya carded 68, 70 and 70 in 54 holes while Banda managed 68, 67 and 73.

Defending champion Chinhoi 69, 66 and 75 to settle for third place.

Stuart Krog carded 69, 70 and 72 to finish on  5 - under and tie for fourth place along with Trainos Muradzikwa who shot rounds of 67, 72 and 72.

Zimbabwe Professional Golf Association (ZPGA) Akil Yousuf was happy with the level of competition exuded by the golfers at the event.

"The event has been fantastic and this year's prize is quite big and goes a long way for our professional golfers. It is testament to the way they played because 8-under over three days, on a championship golf course sho the commitment by the players but also our sponsors and we are grateful to them.

"And as I mentioned they have partnered with the Sunshine Tour that winner of this tournament get a invitation to play at the Players Championship in South Africa next week," Akil said.

Newavakash were main sponsors of the event alongside CBZ, Old Mutual, AFC and POSB among others.
