Veremu relishes debut final

IN-FORM Bulawayo Chiefs striker Billy Veremu looks forward to his first cup final in the topflight league when his side takes on Herentals in the Chibuku Super Cup at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

It will be the first major trophy final appearance for both sides after they defied odds to reach the final.

Veremu (26) notched a brace on Sunday when The Ninjas despatched Yadah 2-0 in a league match at Luveve Stadium.

The former Ngezi Platinum Stars striker played in the second half when his side beat Herentals 2-1 at the same venue about three weeks ago in what both sides’ coaches Thulani Sibanda (Chiefs) and Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva (Herentals) dubbed a rehearsal of the final.

Veremu missed on another Chibuku Super Cup final in 2019 when he was at Ngezi Platinum with his former club losing to Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium.

The striker has been a revelation for The Ninjas and in Obriel Chirinda’s absence. Bulawayo Chiefs will obviously be banking on him playing alongside veterans Perfect Chikwende and Farau Matare.

“This is my first cup final. When Ngezi played the final of the Chibuku Super Cup against Highlanders in 2019, I had been dropped to the club’s Division One side after a change of coaches. This is a big moment for me. It’s a grand achievement to be playing in the final. It is every player’s dream. That win against Yadah whereby I scored a brace boosted us as a team and heightened my morale,” Veremu said.

Veremu, a menace playing on the right wing, says he is not under pressure at all playing in the final and the coveted silverware will stay in Bulawayo.

“The final does not put any pressure on me at all. I know how to handle it and we are going to win this cup. It will remain in Bulawayo. I am confident because of the depth that is in our team and the winning formula. The morale is high and we are looking forward to the game. Everyone is focused and the senior players who have played big finals before are giving us good guidance,” he said.

The Students also troop to Bulawayo with only one thing in mind, to win their first silverware in the PSL, since they started playing topflight football in 2018.

They bring along the likes of Brighton Majarira and Innocent Benza who could carry the day for Herentals on Sunday.
