Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, luxury in a box

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has long occupied a unique space in the automotive landscape as a vehicle that feels just as natural pulling up to a five-star hotel valet as it wades through a muddy riverbed.

With its latest iteration, Toyota has completely rewritten the visual playbook by trading soft curves for an unapologetically aggressive, squared-off silhouette, raising an intriguing question as to whether this new 4x4 represents the ultimate manifestation of luxury in a box.

Toyota positions this new Prado under the banner of being truly masterful, claiming the SUV strikes the perfect balance between rugged functionality and authentic style.

Designed to appeal equally to off-road purists and urban warriors, the vehicle aims to make an art form out of any adventure by fusing its legendary reliability with a bold, heritage-inspired design language.

With a starting price well north of the one-million-rand mark in South Africa, the Land Cruiser Prado firmly retains its status as an elite symbol of wealth, though its translation of prestige has shifted.

Where modern luxury SUVs often rely on flashy chrome, aerodynamic styling, the Prado commands respect through sheer presence and a sense of rugged elegance.

Its lowered beltline, muscular trapezoidal wheel arches, and imposing Toyota-lettered front grille signal to onlookers that its owner values substance and heritage, telling the world that you can afford to go anywhere, even if you choose to just cruise through the suburbs.

Inside, that wealth factor becomes tangible within a cabin sanctuary of full leather upholstery that boasts power-folding seats, a digital rear-view mirror, a premium heads-up display and heated seating for both the driver and passengers.

Under the hood, Toyota has re-tuned its acclaimed 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbodiesel engine and mated it to a smooth, new 8-speed automatic transmission.

This power delivery is engineered to be responsive yet highly capable, returning a respectable estimated fuel consumption of 7.9l / 100km on a combined cycle.

On the tarmac, a full-time All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system delivers a confidence-inspiring, refined cruising experience, but the Prado truly comes alive when the pavement ends.

Drivers can seamlessly adapt to changing environments using the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) switch to toggle between dedicated settings like Rock, Mogul, Loose Rock, Mud and Sand or Rock and Dirt.

To make off-roading less stressful, an updated Multi-Terrain Monitor utilises high-resolution cameras, complete with an integrated cleaner, to give the driver a clear view of the area immediately around and beneath the vehicle, effectively making the hood invisible on treacherous trails.

This beautifully rugged box is also packed to the brim with modern technology and cutting-edge safety features.

The command centre of the cabin is a centrally mounted 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that fully supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, supplemented by a wireless charging station to keep devices powered.

Safety has seen a generational leap as well, with the new Prado coming equipped with the enhanced Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS3) suite.

This advanced sensor system powers proactive safety measures, including a Pre-Crash System (PCS) with synchronised braking to detect oncoming vehicles and pedestrians, Adaptive All-Speed Cruise Control, a Lane Keeping System and an Adaptive High-beam System.

Furthermore, drivers benefit from a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) for a full bird’s-eye perspective, a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and a pioneering Safe Exit Assist (SEA) kit designed to prevent doors from opening into oncoming traffic.

In South Africa, Toyota has streamlined the launch lineup into premium, highly specified tiers that reflect its luxury positioning, starting with the Prado 2.8GD VX-R from R1 515 200 and the Prado 2.8GD VX-L from R1 528 400.

These prices are inclusive of VAT and buyers of the flagship VX-L also receive a 3-year/100,000km warranty, a 9-service/90,000km service plan and 12 months of complimentary 25GB in-car Wi-Fi.

Ultimately, if your definition of luxury is a fragile, low-slung status symbol built strictly for smooth highways, the Prado might puzzle you.

However, by combining premium interior craftsmanship and cutting-edge tech with an indestructible, chiseled exterior that can conquer the African continent, Toyota has proven that luxury doesn’t have to be delicate, delivering premium luxury wrapped in a beautifully rugged box.
