My heartfelt gratitude also goes to the dedicated educators and Chinese language teachers from the Confucius Institute at the University of Zimbabwe and other educational institutions across the country. Your unwavering efforts are not only advancing the quality education in Zimbabwe, but also strengthening the bonds of friendship between our two nations. Your passion and professionalism command our deepest admiration.
Given your academic background and accomplishments in your study and your work, I trust that you’ve already developed a deep affection for China and its culture, and you’ve committed yourselves to strengthening the ties between China and Zimbabwe. There is little need for me to elaborate on the importance of China or of our bilateral relations — your active engagement speaks volumes.
Over the years, China and Zimbabwe have built a comprehensive educational partnership characterized by robust exchanges, scholarship programmes, and inter-university collaboration. China has also contributed to the construction and upgrading of primary and secondary schools, university facilities, and the provision of high-tech equipment here in Zimbabwe.
This dynamic synergy in education forms a vital part of our broader partnership as an All-Weather Community with a Shared Future. Our relationship has gained significant momentum through frequent high-level exchanges, notably two visits by H.E. President ED Mnangagwa to China within just over a year. These engagements have substantially deepened our bilateral cooperation, leading to transformative developments in Zimbabwe's infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, science, and technology.
Our partnership is rooted in our shared history of anti-colonial struggle and common values. Several weeks ago, I had the honour of attending the 80th birthday celebration of Hon. Senator Angeline K. Tongogara, whose late husband is a well-known national hero and pioneer of Zimbabwe’s military forces, General Josiah Magama Tongogara. During his training in China in the 1960s, General Tongogara studied Chairman Mao’s theory of “people’s war,” later capturing its essence in the Shona proverb: “Simba rehove riri mumvura” — the strength of a fish lies in the water. This philosophy continues to inspire Zimbabwe in its journey towards modernization.
Earlier this month, I was proud to invite Senator Tongogara and her daughter to visit China and retrace the General’s footsteps. Her profound emotion mirrored our own, as we witnessed the torch of solidarity being passed to your generation. This journey is a powerful reminder: the bonds between our nations are timeless—forged in liberation struggle and nurtured in mutual respect.
For over 45 years, our friendship has delivered tangible and transformative outcomes for Zimbabwe — a legacy in which we take immense pride. I need not list these achievements one by one, as they have been vividly captured in the historic photo exhibition and the video we just viewed.
Beyond the landmark projects and initiatives, our economic ties thrive: bilateral trade surged to 3.8 billion dollars in 2024. Over 1,400 Chinese-invested enterprises have been newly registered since 2022, with projected investment exceeding 10 billion dollars. The trade and investment ties between China and Zimbabwe now underpin the livelihoods of more than one million Zimbabweans. These achievements are the fruits of our joint efforts and unshakable commitment to win-win cooperation. As a Chinese proverb goes, a single tree does not make a forest. Real progress is never achieved alone, but through the collective strength of partnership.

Looking ahead, even greater opportunities lie on the horizon. Next year, China will launch its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which aligns closely with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 2 and Vision 2030. This convergence promises enhanced collaboration in trade, investment, green energy, digital innovation, and — most importantly — human capital development. As Zimbabwe implements its Heritage-Based Education 5.0, China stands ready to support the strengthening of your education sector.
It is against this backdrop that we celebrate two awards. To the essay contest participants: I was deeply moved by every word of your submissions. You have demonstrated profound passion, patriotism, insights, and a sophisticated understanding of China-Zimbabwe relations. We are truly proud of you.
To the scholarship recipients: This award recognizes your academic excellence, and your dedication to mastering the Chinese language. You are not only outstanding students but also cultural ambassadors, and this makes you truly deserving of this honour. Over 30 years ago, during my university studies, both my wife and I were trained as Chinese language teachers for international learners. With firsthand experience in this field, I can attest that Chinese is not an easy language to master. I applaud your courage and your diligence.
The scholarship is far more than financial assistance; it is an investment in your potential and a recognition of your hard work. As China-Zimbabwe relations continue to deepen as an All-weather Community with a Shared Future, your language skills and cross-cultural insights will unlock boundless opportunities for yourselves and for your country. Seize possibilities, and unleash your potential—Zimbabwe needs your vision, your ideas, and your contributions.
Let us draw inspiration from the timeless Shona proverb: “Rume rimwe harikombe churu” — one person cannot overcome a challenge alone. This spirit of solidarity is woven into the very DNA of China-Zimbabwe friendship.
We are partners who share weal and woe. And as we forge ahead, let us weave our national visions into a shared future—a future built not just on iconic projects, but on enduring institutions that nurture our youth, drive inclusive growth, and sustain our partnership for generations to come.
