How SoftOrbits achieved over 300,000 users by offering simple, feature-focused image editing software

SoftOrbits is a software development company founded by Eugene Ustinenkov in 2006. Focusing on delivering multiple feature-focused user-friendly solutions for image editing, SoftOrbits became one of the leading companies in its niche, providing services to more than 300,000 customers and reaching over 1,000,000 downloads in 2024.

In a highly popular and extremely competitive photo editing niche, achieving such numbers is an impressive achievement, and the team behind SoftOrbits considers accessibility to be the main reason behind it. Most of the tools the company develops are single-feature utilities that remove skill requirements associated with high-end editing software and enable any user to edit or fix their photos quickly and easily.

“Think of it this way: people across the globe take around five billion photos every day, and most of them want their photos to look good. Now, how many of these people have experience with expert image editing tools? Our goal is to ensure that everyone can convert formats, remove backgrounds, and fix lighting in their photos in a matter of seconds, without having to spend hours watching tutorials,” says Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

How SoftOrbits’ bet on diversified beginner-friendly tools paid off

Starting in 2006 as a small startup with budget constraints, SoftOrbits naturally gravitated towards building its first utility as a single-feature tool that could help clients with a specific issue. Picture Doctor — a tool that restores corrupted image data from photos and Adobe Photoshop projects — was exactly that.

Not only does Picture Doctor handle an extremely difficult technical task, but it also does it in one click, meaning that users don’t have to learn anything about image data processing at all — and this has become the standard the team follows to this day.

Over the next few years, SoftOrbits doubled down on providing simple and convenient tools by becoming the first company to release utilities for batch removal of stamps, logos, and watermarks. This marks the moment SoftOrbits was recognized in the industry and started receiving awards: from first editorial choice awards from CNET and Softonic to last year’s inclusion in the top 10 software companies by OISV.

Finally, the team’s latest tools use in-built AI features to automate even more processes and enable users to use prompts to achieve desired results. SoftOrbits’ AI-powered software is capable of automated color correction, prompt-based photo editing, and image restoration among other features.

“Our marketing strategy is built around providing targeted solutions to users. When a user needs to denoise their photo, we don’t suggest downloading a giant software that aims to do everything. Instead, we offer a utility that is specifically designed to handle just that task but do it perfectly. As a user, you don’t have to navigate endless menus or follow multi-step algorithms to achieve what you need. Just press a button. You can’t beat that convenience,” explains Eugene Ustinenkov, CEO of SoftOrbits with 10+ years of software development experience.

Overall, as of 2025, SoftOrbits offers more than 25 solutions designed to deal with most issues that photo enthusiasts usually encounter. This includes the following:

Moving forward

The team already sees new opportunities to provide an even more inclusive service to its users. The next step for SoftOrbits is moving to a SaaS model, enabling clients all over the world to access the tools online without the need to download them. This, combined with incredible automation capabilities provided by AI, will elevate the team’s offerings to a new level.

“SaaS is the next great leap for our team, and it's the only logical way for any company planning to deliver even more accessible products. It enables unlimited access from different devices, making editing, restoring, and protecting your photos available at all times — and that’s what we’ve always aimed for,” says Hannes Jansen, writer and editor at SoftOrbits.
