Zanu PF youth leader calls for peace ahead of August 23 poll

News
Machakaire, who is seeking re-election in Wedza South, also called on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to ensure perpetrators of violence, including any party members caught offside, are arrested.

Zanu PF Youth Leader, Tinoda Machakaire, has made an impassioned plea for peace and tolerance before and after the August 23 election.

Machakaire, who is seeking re-election in Wedza South, also called on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to ensure perpetrators of violence, including any party members caught offside, are arrested.

According to Machakaire, any Zanu PF member caught engaging in acts of violence will be sanctioned.

"Our President has on several occasions called for peace to prevail during the election, and it so follows that we should all observe peace as we vote regardless of political affiliation," Machakaire said.

"No one, even any Zanu PF member should be spared for engaging in acts of violence. We all want a peaceful election.

“As a party, we are also going to ensure that all our members who are caught engaging in acts of violence are disciplined and sanctioned in terms of party processes.

“All those (party members) that engage in such acts of violence will have themselves to blame as the party won't tolerate renegades."

Zimbabwe has been witnessing an increase in cases of politically motivated violence.

Human rights’ watchdogs have expressed fears that the country is headed towards another disputed election marred by political violence.

An opposition supporter was killed recently while fleeing a Zanu PF mob.
