A 160-KILOWATT (kW) solar power system has been installed in the Tongogara Soti Source area in Gutu, Masvingo, by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The project is part of the government’s ongoing rural electrification programme aimed at enhancing education, healthcare, business operations, and public service delivery.
REA acting chief executive officer Felistar Makumbinde reaffirmed the agency’s goal to electrify all rural areas by 2030.
“By 2030, every rural area will have access to one form of energy or another. We are also building free biogas digesters for cattle owners,” she said during the commissioning ceremony.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Ezra Chadzamira emphasised that solar energy will significantly improve livelihoods.
State Security minister Lovemore Matuke urged residents to safeguard infrastructure, adding that vandalism would not be tolerated.
Energy minister July Moyo said rural electrification was a catalyst for socio-economic transformation.
Tongogara Soti Source joins the growing list of rural communities benefiting from the rural electrification drive.
