Armed robbers target transport operators

Police warned transport operators to exercise extreme caution when picking up passengers at unusual hours.

BULAWAYO is witnessing a spike in armed robberies targeting transport operators, including pirate taxis.

Police warned transport operators to exercise extreme caution when picking up passengers at unusual hours.

In one incident, two unidentified suspects armed with a pistol ambushed victims travelling in a silver Honda along Intemba Road from Pumula East to Nkulumane.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said the suspects attempted to sexually assault a female passenger, but were overpowered and fled.

In another incident that took place on June 14, a 30-year-old man from Nketa 9 was attacked while pirating in his Honda Fit.

The victim had picked up three unknown male passengers, who later turned on him and robbed him of his valuables. The trio exited the vehicle and left in a GD-6 twin cab with no number plates, which was trailing them.

The total value of the stolen items was estimated at US$200.
