Mberengwa gets new health centre

These include centres in Cowdray Park in Bulawayo, Runyararo in Chimanimani and Stoneridge in Harare South.

THE newly-constructed Mataga Health Centre in Mberengwa district is set to be commissioned next week to improve healthcare access in underserved regions.

The centre is expected to serve thousands of residents from Mataga and surrounding communities to alleviate pressure on distant referral hospitals and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

“This new facility represents more than just bricks and mortar,” Health and Child Care minister, Douglas Mombeshora, said in a statement ahead of the June 20 official opening.

“It is a symbol of our commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare access for all Zimbabweans, regardless of their geographic location.”.

The Mataga centre is one of several rural health facilities completed under government’s Health Infrastructure Development Plan, a national strategy aimed at bolstering primary healthcare delivery.

These include centres in Cowdray Park in Bulawayo, Runyararo in Chimanimani and Stoneridge in Harare South.

Mobeshora said the centres were designed to bring essential health services closer to communities while reducing congestion in urban hospitals.

According to the Health ministry, the rural health sector has seen a 28% increase in coverage since 2021 due to the construction of new clinics and deployment of health personnel.

In addition, the government has partnered international agencies such as Unicef and the World Health Organisation to provide critical medical supplies, training and technical support.
