A 43-YEAR-OLD man from Chief Tshitshi in Plumtree has been sentenced to 210 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to physical abuse of his mother, accusing her of witchcraft.
Mandlenkosi Sibanda appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware recently and was sentenced to 12 months in prison and six months were suspended.
The other six months were commuted to 210 hours of community service.
Prosecutor Selestine Madziwa told the court that the complainant is Sibanda’s mother Margaret Mpofu (68), who hails from the same village.
The court heard that on January 29 this year, Sibanda went to his mother’s homestead and shouted obscenities to her claiming that she was a witch who caused his divorce.
Sibanda assaulted his mother with a wooden stick and she sustained injuries all over the body.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
His mother was referred to hospital for medical examination.
