Plumtree businessman faces rape, murder charges

The matter came to light at the Plumtree magistrates courts last Thursday when the businessman, Cabangane Mathe, appeared before magistrate Mark Dzira.

A PLUMTREE-based businessman allegedly raped and killed his victim to conceal the sexual assault.

The matter came to light at the Plumtree magistrates courts last Thursday when the businessman, Cabangane Mathe, appeared before magistrate Mark Dzira.

Mathe was not asked to plead to the charge and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court ordered him to be mentally examined in terms of the Mental Health Act.

Allegations are that on March 22, a police officer Thembani Mukanyani  took the now deceased to ZRP Plumtree after she was raped by Mathe.

Mathe had allegedly promised to employ the victim as a shopkeeper after the crime.

The court heard that the duo later hatched a plan to kill her in a bid to conceal the rape.

Mukanyani took the victim around 2000hrs on the same day from the police safe house and drove her to Botswana through an undesignated port entry.

Upon arrival, he fatally assaulted the victim with a sharp object several times on the head.

The cop is also being charged separately
