THE poor road network in Nkayi has severely affected the delivery of food aid from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in Bulawayo to the district, the local legislator has said.
Nkayi South MP Jabulani Hadebe (Citizens Coalition for Change) told Southern Eye that the Nkayi-Bulawayo Road is dilapidated and this is crippling the delivery of food aid to desperate villagers.
Hadebe called on the government to embark on the rehabilitation of the Nkayi-Bulawayo Road, adding that this would attract investment to the district and spur development.
“As we are facing drought at the moment, we depend on the food delivery from Bulawayo, but due to the sorry state of the road, we are facing difficulties as the transporters are finding it hard to bring food supplies due to the bad state of the road,” he said.
Hadebe said a well-constructed road network would assist in attracting investment to Nkayi.
“Some time ago, mining companies in Nkayi approached authorities with an idea to construct roads in Nkayi, but the government told them to hand over the financial resources to it and that’s how the deal collapsed as the companies did not agree,” he said.
“Construction of roads from Bulawayo to Nkayi will allow building of shops along the way, hence creating employment for our citizens and improving their livelihoods.”
Hadebe said the construction of Nkayi roads was moving at a snail’s pace and bemoaned government’s plan to start road construction from Bubi district, neglecting the Bulawayo side.
