Nearly a dozen cattle in Nkayi have reportedly died after eating garbage at unfenced dumpsites at the district’s growth point.
Villagers accused the Nkayi Rural District Council and the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) of failing to fence off the dumpsites.
The villagers, mainly from ward 20, complained that many cattle were affected after eating plastics and solid waste.
“This requires council and Ema to fence off the dumpsite to prevent these problems,” said one of the villagers.
Nkayi South legislator, Jabulani Hadebe (CCC) confirmed receiving complaints from locals about unfenced dumpsites at the business centre.
“Nine cattle have so far died after eating plastics from the dump site.
“As MP for Nkayi South, I will talk to the council, Ema and Veterinary Services Department seeking ways to assist the locals and stop this problem that is affecting their cattle now,” Hadebe said.
Contacted for comment, Nkayi chief executive officer Silibele Mpofu said: “But coming to the fencing of the dumpsite, it’s on the agenda. We wanted to do some farrows but we were then told by Ema that we needed to put a fence.
