Silobela man survives gun attack at illegal roadblock

Local
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmauel Mahoko confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspects in connection with the attempted murder.

A 19-YEAR-OLD Silobela man recently survived a near fatal encounter with suspected armed robbers who fired shots at him at an illegal roadblock.

The police have confirmed that they have since arrested three suspects for attempted murder which occurred near Cross Roads business centre in Silobela, Midlands.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmauel Mahoko confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspects in connection with the attempted murder.

He also confirmed that the roadblock at which the incident happened was unlawful.

“On June 21 at 1:50am, Clever Siwawa (19) of Muchape village under Chief Malisa, Silobela and his friends were on their way home from Cross Roads business centre. Along the way, they met three unknown men who ordered them to stop,” Mahoko said.

He said Siwawa and his friends were suspicious of the roadblock.

“They panicked and fled in different directions and one of the three men allegedly fired a shot from a firearm which hit Siwawa in the abdomen,” Mahoko said.

“Siwawa managed to stagger home where upon arrival he informed his uncle about the incident a report was made to Silobela police.”

He said the suspects were arrested within hours.

“On the same date at 7am, subsequent investigations by police led to the arrest of two suspects Samson Mhlanga (20) of 2 Parkevillage and Costa Ncube (46) of Leke village, both areas under Chief Malisa in Silobela. They were arrested at Parker business centre in the same Silobela area and will appear in court for trial,” Mahoko said.

He said Siwawa was treated and discharged from hospital.

“We continue to applaud the public for assisting us with information that has led to the successful arrest of crime suspects in the past.”
