LEARNERS with special needs at Fatima Primary School in Jotsholo, Matabeleland North province, will enjoy smooth learning following the completion of a hostel built by Uluntu Community Foundation.
This comes after learners with disabilities at the referral school, which accommodates children from Binga, Victoria Falls, Hwange and Kamativi, have been facing challenges in accessing education due to the special care they need.
Uluntu Community Foundation executive director Sibusisiwe Sithole said the hostel was 95% complete.
“After realising that there are some children who are not at school because of lack of accommodation, we started building a hostel 15 months ago,” Sithole said.
“This will accommodate 45 children with special needs, avoiding the challenges of having to walk long distances to access education.”
Fatima Primary School head Peter Ngona confirmed the gesture saying there were only a few touch ups left for the hostel to start functioning.
“They did build a hostel which is almost complete. It’s only the installation of solar panels and water connection (which is left),” Ngona said.
Fatima is located on the edge of the Hwange National Park, with predators sometimes wandering into the community, endangering people’s lives, which does not spare children with disabilities going to school.
