Police in Bulawayo were on Friday locked in running battles with pirate taxi operators as the law enforcement agency intensified its blitz against illegal transport operators in the city.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police last week launched an operation targeting unlicensed transport operators, which is said was meant to restore sanity on the country’s roads.
A snap survey by Southern Eye on Sunday showed that traditional pick-up points for pirate taxis in the central business district were deserted.
Commuters struggled to get transport during peak hours and there was a heavy police presence.
Mikel Moyo, who drives a pirate taxi, said police were driving them away from the CBD.
"The police are arresting us at our traditional pick up points saying that we are blocking traffic,” Moyo said.
“The way the police are going on about the operation puts people’s lives at risks as some drivers end up driving against oncoming traffic as they flee from police officers.”
