HARARE, July 2 (NewsDay Live) - The opposition Zimbabwe African National Congress (ZANC) has called on government to declare July 1 a public holiday in commemoration of the life, legacy, and contributions of the late former Vice-President Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo.
In a statement, ZANC president Timothy Mncube said Nkomo's indelible mark on Zimbabwe's history, politics, and development is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the country's struggle for independence, unity, and progress.
"As a stalwart leader, he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's narrative, fostering a sense of national identity, and championing the rights of the marginalised," he said.
"Through his tireless efforts, Nkomo left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations of Zimbabweans. "His commitment to the principles of justice, equality, and freedom remains a beacon of hope for our nation, and his contributions to the country's development are a lasting reminder of his selflessness and vision,"Mncube added.
He noted that the declaration of July 1 as a public holiday is to be known as Joshua Nkomo Day, adding it would be a befitting tribute to his memory and a celebration of his lasting impact on the nation's history and development.
"This recognition would provide an opportunity for the nation to reflect on Nkomo's remarkable life, legacy, and contributions, and to reaffirm our commitment to the values and ideals that he embodied,"Mncube said.
He added: "The Zimbabwe African National Congress (ZANC) firmly believes that this declaration would not only honor Nkomo's memory but also serve as a reminder of the importance of unity, peace, and reconciliation in our nation-building endeavors. It would be a testament to the government's commitment to recognising and celebrating the contributions of national heroes and heroines, but who have shaped our country's history." "We believe that this recognition will inspire future generations to emulate Nkomo's selflessness, leadership, and vision, and to continue working towards a brighter future for all Zimbabweans," Mncube told NewsDay Live.
