UN Women rep calls for action on gender equality

United Nations Women Zimbabwe

HARARE, Apr. 3 (NewsDay Live) – United Nations Women Zimbabwe country representative Fatou Lo yesterday called for collective action to advance gender equality, highlighting the importance of creating an enabling environment for women-owned businesses to grow and thrive.

She was speaking during the belated commemorations of International Women's Day held in Harare on Thursday.

Addressing diplomats, gender activists and representatives from several women's organisations, Lo highlighted the potential of women in success, citing examples of Zimbabwean women who have made significant impacts globally, such as actress Danai Gurira, philanthropist Tsitsi Masiyiwa, and athlete Kirsty Coventry, among others.

"Kirsty Coventry shattered a 130-year-old glass ceiling, becoming the 10th IOC President, first female, first African and youngest ever," Lo said.

"These stories are a testament to the incredible potential of women. Yet, as we meet here today, in too many places, women’s rights are being rolled back. Our hope is in the knowledge that the champions of gender equality are not afraid of the pushback. In the words of Sima Bahous, UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director, 'We have faced it before. We have not backed down. And we will not back down.

She also acknowledged the government of its efforts to promote gender equality, including the adoption of policies that support women's rights and participation in all spheres of life.

During the event, Lo announced the launch of two critical studies conducted in partnership with the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries, focusing on the impact of austerity measures on women-owned businesses and gender equality in the private sector.

"In the current global context, where gender equality remains a pressing issue, we call upon all stakeholders to take decisive action," she said.

"To our government partners, we urge you to double down on your commitment by adopting and enforcing policies that support women’s rights. To the Private Sector, we encourage you to create inclusive workplaces that empower women and promote diversity. To development partners, your advocacy and support are vital in driving change and holding institutions accountable."

Speakers during the event emphasized the call to action, urging all stakeholders to take decisive action to support gender equality and women's empowerment.
