Power generation dropped 15% 2024 Q4

The index also reflects a year-on-year increase of 2,6% when compared to 88.1 recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023.

THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency has released its Index of Electricity Generation for the fourth quarter of 2024, revealing a quarter-on-quarter decline of 14,5% in electricity generation.

“The Index of Electricity Generation for the fourth quarter of 2024 was 90.4, reflecting a quarter-on-quarter percentage decrease of 14,5 from 105.8 in the third quarter 2024,” the report read.

The index also reflects a year-on-year increase of 2,6% when compared to 88.1 recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023.

“A total of 1 940,8GWh of electricity were generated during the fourth quarter 2024,” the report states.

Hwange Thermal and Kariba power stations accounted for 72,4% and 22,7% of the total electricity generated, respectively.

In addition to domestic generation, Zimbabwe imported 487,8GWh of electricity during the fourth quarter of 2024, reflecting a 20,2% point decrease from 611,1GWh imported in the third quarter of 2024.

“A total of 487,8GWh of electricity were imported in 4th quarter 2024, reflecting a 20,2% decrease from 611,1GWh imported in third quarter 2024,” the report reads.

Year-on-year comparison shows a 28,7% increase in electricity imported from 379,1GWh imported in the fourth quarter of 2023.

South Africa’s Eskom provided 47,0% of the imported electricity, while HCB and EDM of Mozambique provided 25% and 18%, respectively.

“The total volume of electricity distributed during the fourth quarter of 2024 was 2084,2GWh,” according to the report.

This reflects a percentage decrease of 8,6% when compared to 2 279,5GWh distributed in the third quarter of 2024.

Year-on-year comparison shows a 4,9% decrease in electricity distributed when compared to 2 192,2GWh distributed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The manufacturing, transport, and construction sectors combined received 776,2GWh of the distributed electricity during the fourth quarter.
